Daegu City’s ambitious plan to establish a ‘Cultural and Artistic Hub’ in Dalseong County, featuring the National Museum of Modern Art and a musical complex, has been abandoned. The recent decision by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) to proceed with the original plan has effectively scrapped the relocation. Daegu City’s attempts to change the location, despite strong opposition from residents in Buk-gu District, have ultimately failed. The ‘Cultural and Artistic Hub’ project was a key pledge by President Yoon Suk-yeol to promote cultural development in the Daegu region. The original plan envisioned building the National Museum of Modern Art and a National Creative Musical Complex on the former site of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Provincial Office (currently the site of the Daegu City Hall demolition), with the aim of dispersing cultural infrastructure beyond the Seoul metropolitan area. However, the project faced delays and strong opposition from local residents, leading Daegu City to propose a new location in Dalseong County in April 2023. Despite efforts to secure the change, including lobbying by Mayor Hong Jun-pyo, the MCST ultimately decided against the relocation, citing the suitability of the original site. Daegu City now faces criticism for attempting to push through the relocation despite opposition and will need to reconsider its plans for the Dalseong County site.
