Mercedes Formula 1 team boss Toto Wolff has criticized Williams’ James Vowles for his blunt assessment of Mick Schumacher, calling it unnecessary. Vowles, Williams’ team principal, opted to promote the team’s junior driver Franco Colapinto over Schumacher for the Italian Grand Prix, citing Colapinto’s greater potential within Williams’ academy. While acknowledging Schumacher’s experience, Vowles stated that he wasn’t a ‘special’ driver. Wolff, who has been a vocal supporter of Schumacher, expressed his displeasure with Vowles’ comments, arguing that Schumacher deserved more respect after his struggles at Haas. Wolff pointed out Schumacher’s impressive racing record and highlighted the tough environment he faced at Haas, emphasizing that he still deserved a chance. Colapinto, who has been in the Williams academy, has since made his Formula 1 debut. He finished the opening practice session for the Italian Grand Prix in 17th place.
