The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has disconnected the University of Lagos (UNILAG) from the national grid due to an unpaid electricity bill amounting to N472 million. The university’s main campus has been plunged into darkness since Tuesday, causing disruption to academic activities and student life. UNILAG has stated that it recently paid N180 million to EKEDC but was disconnected without prior notice despite ongoing negotiations. The university claims that EKEDC unilaterally moved UNILAG to a higher tariff band, leading to a significant increase in electricity bills. UNILAG has expressed its inability to pay more than N180 million monthly and has requested to remain in the lower tariff band. The university has appealed for understanding from students and staff as it continues to engage with EKEDC to resolve the situation.
