The United Nations Human Rights Office (OHCHR) is sending a fact-finding mission to Bangladesh to investigate alleged human rights violations that occurred during recent student protests against the government. The mission will aim to determine the causes of these violations and provide recommendations for immediate justice, accountability, and long-term reforms. The decision comes after a UN team visited Bangladesh in August, meeting with government officials and stakeholders, including representatives from the interim government. The mission will consult with victims and their families. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, commended Bangladesh’s efforts to establish a national commission to investigate cases of enforced disappearances, a long-standing issue in the country.
