The UK government is investing £40 million in a new initiative to improve early warning systems for floods and droughts. A nationwide network of sensors will be deployed in rivers to gather real-time data, allowing for more accurate predictions and proactive measures to minimize the impact of extreme weather events. The project, led by the Natural Environment Research Council (Nerc) and the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, aims to “halt damage and cut eye-watering cost to the economy.” The initiative will also facilitate research and development of new technologies and strategies to address the increasing challenges posed by climate change.
