The Dutch Data Protection Authority (DPA) has imposed a record-breaking fine of €290 million on Uber for transferring data of European drivers registered on its app to the United States without adequate safeguards. This hefty fine, the largest ever levied on the company, stems from the DPA’s conclusion that Uber failed to comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) by not ensuring the appropriate level of data protection for transfers to the US. The transferred data included driver licenses, location data, photographs, payment details, and identity documents. The DPA highlighted that Uber’s actions were considered very serious, as they jeopardized the privacy of European drivers.
