The United Arab Emirates has requested France to provide consular services to Pavel Durov, founder of Telegram. The UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Durov, who holds both French and Emirati citizenship, was arrested in France as part of an investigation into crimes related to child pornography, drug trafficking, and fraud. Durov was detained at Le Bourget Airport near Paris on suspicion of violating various regulations related to the encrypted messaging app. French authorities extended his detention after his initial arrest, pending further investigation. The 39-year-old Russian-French billionaire was apprehended while traveling from Baku, Azerbaijan. He was scheduled to spend the evening in Paris, but his plans were disrupted by the arrest. A judge overseeing the case, which involves allegations of organized crime, has extended Durov’s detention for up to 96 hours.
