Yüreğir Municipality in Adana, Turkey, has taken a significant step towards promoting gender equality in the local community. The municipality’s council has adopted the ‘European Charter for Equality of Women and Men in Local Life,’ a framework developed by the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR). This commitment follows the municipality’s previous initiatives to empower women in social and economic spheres. The charter, which was unanimously approved by the council, outlines key steps local governments can take to effectively implement gender equality principles. The municipality has authorized its Women and Family Services Directorate to begin the process of signing the charter. A detailed action plan, involving local public institutions and civil society organizations, will be developed to guide the implementation of the charter’s provisions.
