The street where renowned Turkish physician and founder of the Association for Supporting Contemporary Life (ÇYDD), Prof. Dr. Turkan Saylan, lived in Istanbul’s Arnavutköy district has been named after her. The proposal to name the street after Prof. Saylan was initially rejected by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) council in 2020 during a period when the AKP and MHP held a majority. However, following the change in the İBB council’s majority to CHP after the March 2023 elections, the proposal was approved last month. The decision to rename the street was officially implemented on August 30th, with the new street sign being unveiled in a ceremony attended by Besiktas Mayor Rıza Akpolat and other prominent figures. Akpolat emphasized the significance of honoring Prof. Saylan’s dedication to Turkish society and her tireless work in fighting leprosy and promoting education for girls. He also highlighted the previous resistance to the renaming by the AKP and MHP, pledging to continue fighting for the rights of all citizens. Akpolat revealed that the İBB is currently negotiating the purchase of Prof. Saylan’s former residence with the intention of turning it into a museum, ensuring that her legacy and contributions to Turkey are preserved for future generations.
