In the Gondia district of Maharashtra, India, the Tribal Development Corporation (TDC) has suffered a major setback as thousands of quintals of rice purchased by them have gone bad due to a lack of proper storage facilities. The TDC operates 41 centers across the district, where they procure approximately 6 lakh quintals of rice. However, over the past six months, rice millers have failed to collect the procured rice, leading to massive spoilage. The absence of adequate godowns at several TDC centers has exacerbated the problem, leaving the corporation grappling with the question of how to compensate for the loss. The government provides a 1-kilogram compensation per quintal of rice, but the current situation, with thousands of quintals being lost, poses a significant financial challenge. Adding to the woes, the TDC officials have also not received their commission for several years, further complicating the situation.
