Yuanyuan, a giant panda, celebrated her 20th birthday at Taipei Zoo with a special event for visitors. Yuanyuan arrived at the zoo in 2008 from China, along with her mate, Tuantuan, who sadly passed away in 2022. The couple had two daughters, Yuanzai and Yuanbao, who still reside at the zoo. Pandas are native only to China, and Beijing often provides them as a gesture of political goodwill. Yuanyuan and Tuantuan arrived in Taiwan during a period of relative calm between the two sides, which were separated during the Chinese Civil War in 1949.
