Mauro Schmid, a Swiss cyclist, came close to a stage win in the 13th stage of the Vuelta a España, finishing second behind Canadian rider Michael Woods. Schmid, who was in fourth place overall before the stage, was part of a breakaway group that included 23 riders. He remained in contention until the final climb, ultimately losing out to Woods, who secured his third stage victory in this year’s race. Meanwhile, overall race favorite Primoz Roglic made significant progress in the general classification. He finished 16th, gaining almost two minutes on the leader, Ben O’Connor. The Australian rider now holds a lead of only 1 minute and 21 seconds with eight stages remaining. The third-placed rider, Enric Mas of Spain, is now more than three minutes behind O’Connor. The Vuelta continues with another mountain stage on Saturday, featuring the challenging Puerto de Leitarlegos climb.
