In the early hours of Friday, the Special Operations Battalion of the Military Police (BOPE) attempted to negotiate the surrender of a 62-year-old man who had barricaded himself inside a house in Lagoa Vermelha, Brazil. The elderly man is suspected of firing multiple gunshots in public areas of the city. According to reports from the Military Police (BM), the man has a history of similar incidents. Witnesses called authorities around 11 p.m. on Thursday night to report shots fired in a busy street. Police officers confronted the suspect, who exchanged gunfire with them before fleeing into a residence on Santo Antônio Street in the Operário neighborhood. He remained alone in the house, armed with a pistol and a hunting rifle.
