South Korea, a major importer of yellowtail, is taking steps to grow its own supply of the popular fish through a new and innovative fish farming method. The country has built a state-of-the-art yellowtail farming facility in Dangjin, using a closed-system recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) that conserves water and minimizes pollution. This facility is expected to produce up to 500,000 tons of yellowtail annually, replacing a significant portion of the country’s imports. The new farming model is also anticipated to contribute to increased fish income and provide a more stable supply, especially as climate change creates unpredictable conditions for traditional fishing.
