South Korea is expanding a pilot project aimed at enhancing bus safety through the use of artificial intelligence (AI). The initiative, which includes an AI-powered driver assistance system, monitors bus drivers’ behavior in real-time using AI-enabled cameras. The system detects potentially dangerous driving actions such as running red lights, crossing lane markings, using mobile phones, and signs of drowsiness or distraction. Immediate feedback is provided to the driver to help improve their driving habits and prevent accidents. The project, which began with 60 buses in Seoul last year, has already demonstrated a significant reduction in traffic accidents, with a 93.5% decrease in accident rates. The project is now being expanded to include buses used by major companies such as LG Electronics and TS, and aims to make buses safer for both passengers and other road users.
