Nicolas Sarkozy, former French President, has entered the debate surrounding the appointment of a new Prime Minister, advocating for a conservative candidate. In an interview with Le Figaro, Sarkozy argued that France is a right-wing nation and that President Emmanuel Macron is correct in excluding a left-wing coalition, ‘Nouvelle Union Populaire,’ (NUPES) from forming a government due to their lack of majority in the National Assembly. While acknowledging that there is no ideal solution, Sarkozy appealed for a ‘legislative pact’ between all parties excluding the far-right National Rally and the radical left France Insoumise. He suggested that Xavier Bertrand, president of Hauts-de-France, could be a suitable choice, while dismissing Bernard Cazeneuve, a former socialist Prime Minister, due to his association with the Hollande era and the perceived shift in French politics towards the right.
