Plum growers in the Majevica region of Bosnia and Herzegovina are celebrating a record harvest despite challenging drought conditions. Despite an exceptionally dry year and unfavorable weather, the region is expected to produce around 6,000 tons of plums, exceeding previous years’ yields. The quality of the fruit remains high, with good yields reported for pears, apples, and other fruit varieties as well. The early maturation of fruit, attributed to an earlier vegetation period, has led to an early harvest, even for varieties typically harvested in late September. The plums produced in this region are well-regarded and are exported to Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, and Slovenia. However, the growers face challenges including lower plum prices, a shortage of seasonal workers, and rising costs for materials. They are calling for government support to ensure the sustainability of this important agricultural sector in the Majevica region.
