The Portuguese Ministry of Education and unions will meet this Friday to discuss financial support for teachers who are assigned to schools far from their homes. The meeting comes two weeks before the start of the new school year, and will center around implementing a temporary, special regime for teacher hiring as outlined in a recent decree-law. The government and unions will discuss a travel allowance for early childhood educators, primary and secondary school teachers who are assigned to schools in need, particularly those located in the Greater Lisbon area, Alentejo and Algarve. This initiative is part of a larger plan aimed at attracting teachers to schools experiencing a shortage, particularly in these regions, with the goal of reducing the number of students without teachers by 90% compared to last year.
