The National Federation of Physicians (Fnam) in Portugal has extended a strike over overtime work in primary healthcare, impacting patient care. The strike, which began on July 23, was initially set to end on Saturday. However, the Fnam has announced a new, extended period from September 16 to December 31. The union cites the Ministry of Health’s failure to address urgent measures outlined in the Emergency Health Plan, leading to ongoing difficulties for doctors, healthcare professionals, and patients. The Fnam’s demands include a return to a 35-hour workweek, salary adjustments, the integration of internal physicians into the medical career entry category, and the reinstatement of 25 working days of annual vacation, plus five additional vacation days if taken outside peak season. The strike highlights concerns over working conditions and staffing shortages within the Portuguese healthcare system.
