Portugal’s Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel has defended the nomination of Maria Luis Albuquerque as the country’s candidate for the European Commission, highlighting her extensive experience and strong executive profile. He emphasized that Albuquerque’s appointment is beneficial for both Portugal and the European Union. However, the opposition Socialist Party (PS) criticized the selection, claiming that Albuquerque’s legacy of austerity policies and political stance are not aligned with the European Union’s priorities. The PS also expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of consultation with political parties before the decision was made. Portugal’s President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa stated that he was only informed of the nomination and not consulted, adding that he respects the government’s decision. Despite the criticism, Rangel remains confident in Albuquerque’s ability to serve effectively as EU commissioner.
