Jarosław Kaczyński, leader of Poland’s ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party, has indicated a possible merger with the Sovereign Poland party, a coalition partner. He stated that the merger is being seriously considered, with a potential timeline set for September or shortly after. Kaczyński’s comments come amidst financial challenges for PiS, following the rejection of its 2023 election campaign financial report by the State Electoral Commission (PKW). The commission cited irregularities in campaign funding amounting to 3.6 million zloty. As a result, PiS faces a 10 million zloty reduction in its state funding and could be stripped of subsidies for three years. Kaczyński maintains that the irregularities stem from a campaign ad produced during Zbigniew Ziobro’s tenure as justice minister. He appealed to Polish citizens for financial support, emphasizing the importance of winning the upcoming presidential election to maintain PiS’s power and influence.
