The National Meteorological and Hydrological Service of Peru (SENAMHI) has issued an orange alert for southern Peru from August 31st to September 3rd due to an approaching DANA weather phenomenon called ‘Katia’. This event is expected to cause heavy snowfall and significantly lower temperatures, reaching as low as -15°C in some areas. The DANA, a type of isolated low-pressure system, will affect the southern highlands, including regions like Arequipa, Ayacucho, Moquegua, Puno, Tacna, Cusco, Amazonas, Cajamarca, La Libertad, Lambayeque, and Piura. SENAMHI advises residents to be aware of the potential hazards and follow official recommendations to prevent any potential disasters.
