The U.S. Department of Defense has announced that it will provide increased military support to the Secret Service for the protection of major presidential and vice-presidential candidates throughout the 2024 election campaign. This decision comes after an attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania in July. The Defense Department, at the request of the Department of Homeland Security, will deploy National Guard units to provide logistics, transportation, and communication support to the Secret Service. This enhanced security effort is expected to continue through the inauguration of the new president and vice president in January. The Secret Service has stated that this additional support is necessary to ensure the highest levels of safety and security for the candidates throughout the campaign.
