Pensioners in Northumberland are being encouraged to seek advice after changes to the Winter Fuel Payment were announced. The Chancellor’s decision to restrict the payment to those receiving Pension Credit or other means-tested benefits has left many concerned about their ability to afford heating this winter. The payment, worth between £100 and £300, is no longer available to all pensioners, and the Cost of Living payment has also been discontinued. This means many pensioners will be around £600 worse off this winter, despite recent declines in energy prices. Organizations like Citizens Advice Northumberland, Age UK Northumberland, and Northumberland County Council are urging pensioners to check if they are eligible for any other financial support. Geoff Crow, community advice service manager at Citizens Advice Northumberland, highlighted the importance of exploring Pension Credit, even for those receiving the full state retirement pension, as it could potentially offer an additional £3 per week. The organizations are providing support to those who might miss out on Pension Credit and other benefits, helping them navigate the complex system and access the support they need.
