A North Dakota task force dedicated to tackling the state’s teacher shortage has presented a series of recommendations aimed at attracting and retaining educators. The task force, composed of teachers, administrators, school board members, education associations, lawmakers, and representatives from the governor’s office, has put forward nine recommendations, focusing on improving working conditions, boosting professional value, and offering flexible funding. Key suggestions include providing on-site childcare, establishing a mentorship program for new teachers, maximizing benefits, and studying potential cost savings from a statewide health insurance pool. The task force’s recommendations will now be forwarded to Governor Doug Burgum, who will consider incorporating them into his state budget proposal for the 2025 legislative session. The task force believes these recommendations will help address teacher concerns, elevate the profession, and inspire new educators to join the field.
