A new report by The Observatory of Religious Freedom in Africa (ORFA) paints a grim picture of violence in Nigeria, revealing that over 55,000 people have been killed and 21,000 abducted in just four years. The study, covering the period from October 1, 2019 to September 30, 2023, documented 9,970 violent incidents across the country, with an average of eight attacks per day involving deaths or kidnappings. The report highlights the targeting of religious communities, particularly Christians, with the Fulani Ethnic Militia (FEM) identified as the primary perpetrator of these atrocities. Despite the scale of the violence, the report criticizes the lack of effective intervention from security forces, who are often preoccupied with distant military operations.
