New York Governor Kathy Hochul is urging residents to take precautions against mosquitoes ahead of the Labor Day weekend due to the rise in West Nile Virus cases. This year, New York has seen 20 reported cases of West Nile Virus, including 10 in the five boroughs. Governor Hochul also expressed concern about other mosquito-borne diseases like Eastern Equine Encephalitis. To protect themselves, New Yorkers are advised to wear long sleeves and use mosquito repellent. Although most people infected with West Nile Virus experience no symptoms, it can cause serious illness and even death in some cases. While no human cases of Eastern Equine Encephalitis have been reported, 14 horses have tested positive for the virus this summer. The state recommends taking preventative measures to minimize the risk of infection from both West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis.
