Montenegro has seen a recent surge in measles cases, with two new cases reported last week, bringing the total to 21 over the past five months. The latest cases, one in Rozaje and one in Budva, highlight the ongoing threat of the highly contagious disease. The case in Rozaje was linked to the measles outbreak in Serbia, while the Budva case was connected to a previous case in the same municipality. Notably, both new cases involved unvaccinated individuals under the age of six. The majority of cases, 11 in total, have been reported in children under five, with a concerning number of four adults over 40 years old also contracting the disease. Montenegro’s Institute of Public Health (IJZ) is urging parents to vaccinate their children against measles, emphasizing the importance of timely vaccination to prevent outbreaks. The IJZ is also advising against sending unvaccinated children to school or other public gatherings as the new school year begins, citing the increased risk of transmission. They stress that complete vaccination, involving two doses, offers the best protection against measles.
