Spain’s Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has announced the launch of a feasibility study for a direct rail connection between Lugo and Santiago de Compostela. This new line will be a crucial addition to the existing León-A Coruña and Atlantic Axis lines. The study will be conducted in two phases, with the first phase focused on analyzing the existing mobility within Lugo city, assessing passenger flows, and understanding the demand for new transportation services. The second phase will delve into the specifics of the new line, including its exact route and necessary adjustments to existing infrastructure. Ultimately, the study will consider the economic viability and societal impact of the proposed connection, taking into account projected travel times and demand. This initiative has been a long-standing request from the people of Lugo, supported by the Galician Nationalist Bloc (BNG). A new 27-kilometer route between Curtis and Ordes is being considered, which could potentially shorten travel times between Lugo and Santiago de Compostela to under 45 minutes. This project holds significant potential for enhancing connectivity and economic development in the region.
