The Building and Road Workers Federation (INTUC) Pension Forum in Kerala has called for the immediate release of 15 months of back pension owed to construction workers. The demand comes ahead of the upcoming Onam festival, a major holiday in the state. R. Devarajan, the state chairman of the forum, submitted a petition to the Minister highlighting the plight of workers who are facing financial hardship due to the delayed payments. The petition also highlights the issue of pending applications for new pensions and other benefits, such as death benefits, medical assistance, marriage grants, travel allowances, and education scholarships. Over 35,000 workers are waiting for their pension and benefits, while 45,000 are awaiting other benefits. The forum has requested the government to intervene and resolve the financial crisis by repaying a loan of 550 crore rupees taken by the welfare fund. The forum has threatened strong protests if the demands are not met promptly.
