The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has proposed groundbreaking changes to football rules and VAR implementation, with the goal of enhancing the game’s appeal and modernity. The federation, led by Gabriele Gravina, is in talks with the International Football Association Board (IFAB) to introduce alterations that include pausing the clock during stoppages, similar to futsal, and a challenge system for VAR reviews with a limited number of checks per team. Inspired by volleyball, this system would place the responsibility for requesting reviews on team captains or coaches. The FIGC envisions these changes as a way to create a clearer, more entertaining game, particularly for younger audiences. The proposed changes will be tested initially in amateur and lower-division matches in Italy. If successful, they could be implemented in the top leagues of Italian football.
