Istanbul’s airports have seen a significant surge in passenger traffic, surpassing 69.3 million travelers in the first seven months of 2023. This represents an increase of nearly 6 million passengers compared to the same period last year, fueled by the resurgence of air travel following the COVID-19 pandemic. The increase in passenger numbers has been consistent throughout the year, with both Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gökçen Airport witnessing substantial growth. Istanbul Airport welcomed 45.7 million passengers during this period, with international travelers accounting for a majority of the traffic. While domestic passenger numbers saw a slight decline, international passenger numbers rose by 9%. Sabiha Gökçen Airport also recorded a significant increase in both domestic and international passengers, reaching a total of 23.6 million travelers. This reflects a 16% increase in overall passenger numbers compared to the same period last year. The rise in passenger numbers has been accompanied by a corresponding increase in flight operations, with both airports seeing a significant rise in the number of takeoffs and landings.
