India’s judicial system is grappling with a massive backlog of cases, with over 4.45 crore cases currently pending across the country, according to the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG). This includes cases ranging from the Supreme Court to the lowest level Munsiff Court. The sheer volume of pending cases highlights the challenges facing the Indian judiciary, with delays impacting justice for millions. Among the pending cases, over 36 lakh involve women as complainants, highlighting the need for effective and timely resolution of these cases. In Kerala alone, 18 lakh cases remain unresolved, with over two and a half lakh pending in the High Court. The number of cases filed and disposed of in July 2023 further underscores the ongoing burden on the courts. This staggering backlog poses a significant challenge to the Indian judicial system, requiring comprehensive reforms and effective measures to address the issue.
