A leading constitutional expert has cast doubt on the strength of support for Scottish independence, despite recent polls showing it to be higher than in 2014. Professor Nicola McEwen, director of Glasgow University’s Centre for Public Policy, argues that while polls indicate a surge in support for independence, a significant portion of this support is ‘soft’ and not necessarily a priority for many. McEwen points to the fact that the SNP, the party advocating for independence, has experienced a decline in support following the recent General Election. However, former Yes Scotland strategist Stephen Noon sees this as the beginning of a new wave of support for independence, likening it to previous waves that ultimately led to devolution.
