Five individuals in Vietnam have been sentenced to prison for illegally harvesting timber in a protected forest area. Phạm Văn Nhựe, the ringleader, was sentenced to 33 months in prison, while the other four individuals received sentences ranging from 27 to 14 months. The group illegally harvested 47 trees, causing damage estimated at over 87 million Vietnamese dong (approximately $3,700). The illegal logging took place in a natural forest area designated for community management and protection. In addition to the prison sentences, six families involved in the illegal logging operation were fined over 45 million dong for failing to fully implement their forest management and protection responsibilities.
