A vast cloud of sulfur dioxide, released from a volcanic eruption in Iceland’s Reykjanes peninsula, has drifted over Europe, reaching from Spain to Scandinavia. While the cloud is visible from space, it poses no immediate threat to human health, according to Copernicus, the European Earth observation program. The sulfur dioxide plume, which soared to altitudes between 5 and 8 kilometers, is expected to dissipate within a few days, with minimal impact on weather or climate. Authorities in affected countries have not issued any health alerts, and air quality monitoring stations have not detected significant levels of sulfur dioxide at ground level.
