Nestled in the Kelkit district of Gümüşhane, Turkey, the Çimenli Canyon is a breathtaking natural wonder. Formed by the relentless erosion of the Kelkit River, the canyon boasts intriguing rock formations, icy waters, and a refreshingly cool atmosphere, making it a coveted destination this summer. Particularly popular with nature and adventure enthusiasts, the canyon, also known as Yılanlı (Snake) Canyon, has become a hot spot this year, drawing visitors from all corners of the region, including Trabzon’s mountaineering clubs. Gümüşhane Mountaineering, Nature Sports, and Youth Association (GÜDAK) recently organized an expedition to explore the canyon’s beauty, with 19 participants from the province. The group embarked on a challenging hike down the canyon, navigating a 4-kilometer stretch through the river’s icy waters, all while relishing the breathtaking views and the refreshing coolness. The participants swam in the natural pools carved by the river, marveling at the unique rock formations and the canyon’s ancient history. The adventure concluded with a hike through the forest, reaching a plateau where the participants enjoyed a well-deserved break after completing a 9.5-kilometer journey. The participants, exhilarated by the experience, described the Çimenli Canyon as a hidden paradise, praising its captivating beauty and challenging terrain. They emphasized the need to promote the region for its potential in nature sports and ecotourism, as it offers a unique opportunity for those seeking adventure and serenity.
