A group of young people in Hanoi, connected through social media, have been arrested for robbing motorcycle license plates. The gang used weapons to threaten people on the streets, stole license plates, and then posted photos online to brag about their ‘achievements’. Police in Ha Dong District, Hanoi, launched a criminal investigation and detained five suspects: Le Tuan H., Hoang Tien Ph., Ly Trieu Y., Bui Nguyen Hoang L., and Hoang Anh T. The incident occurred on August 25, when police noticed a group of about 20 young people gathering in the To Hiep street area. They were riding motorcycles without license plates and helmets, which raised suspicions of criminal activity. However, when police arrived, the group dispersed. Further investigation revealed that seven of them were armed and involved in stealing license plates at night, capturing images to post online. Police eventually identified the suspects, including Le Tuan H., 16, who had previously been subjected to educational measures for robbery. Nguyen Van Anh T., 14, Hoang Tien Ph., Ly Trieu Y., 16, Bui Nguyen Hoang L., 15, Hoang Anh T., 15, and Tran Van S., 13. According to the police, the suspects confessed that they were mostly friends from their neighborhood or acquaintances from social media. In the early hours of August 26, the group, riding three motorcycles without license plates, gathered in a field in Thuong Vuoc commune, Chuong My district. They decided to use a sword and a knife to stop people on the streets, cut off the plastic part of the license plates, and then take photos of themselves with the stolen plates to post on social media. While investigating, the police found that Tran Van S., being under 14, was sent to a school for disciplinary measures. Nguyen Van Anh T. suffered a brain hemorrhage and was being treated in the hospital due to an assault incident that occurred on August 27 in Chuong My district, which is currently under investigation by the Chuong My District Police Department. The investigation into the license plate robbery case is ongoing.
