Students in a recent Hazmat Technician course hosted by the York County Emergency Management Agency got hands-on experience dealing with hazardous materials. Using water to mimic real chemicals, they learned techniques for containing spills and identifying potential hazards. The course, designed for firefighters and other emergency responders, covered advanced identification of substances, leak sealing, gas identification and classification. The week-long training at the York County government building in Alfred included classroom lectures and practical exercises. Participants from York County and neighboring fire departments, a Midcoast chemical company, and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection gained valuable skills in handling dangerous materials. The course aimed to ensure responders are equipped to safely handle a range of hazards, minimizing potential harm to themselves and the public.
