Hair straightening treatments, particularly those using Glycolic Acid and Keratin, are increasingly raising concerns among health experts. Recent studies have linked these chemicals to acute kidney injury, particularly in young women. A report from Israel detailed 26 cases of kidney damage in women aged 20-30 who underwent hair straightening treatments using Glycolic Acid. The severity of the condition even required dialysis for some patients. Additionally, research published in The New England Journal of Medicine suggests that Keratin products containing Glyoxylic Acid can increase the risk of kidney injury due to the formation of oxalate crystals in the kidneys. Nephrologists explain that Glyoxylic Acid is absorbed into the bloodstream and converted to glyoxylate, which metabolizes into oxalate, a substance that can damage the kidneys. The accumulation of calcium oxalate in the kidney tissue can impair kidney function, leading to potential dialysis requirements or even permanent kidney damage. Early symptoms like burning, itching, or ulcers after treatment should be taken seriously and prompt medical attention sought. While hair straightening can be appealing, it is crucial to exercise caution and seek professional advice before opting for such treatments. Regular check-ups and informed decisions are essential to prevent potential health risks.
