Scientists have discovered a towering underwater mountain in the Pacific Ocean, reaching a height exceeding the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building. The discovery was made during a 28-day expedition led by the Schmidt Ocean Institute, where researchers explored a section of the Nazca Ridge, located near the coast of Chile. The underwater mountain is part of a larger underwater mountain range, a unique ecosystem teeming with diverse marine life, including vibrant coral reefs, sponge gardens, and rare deep-sea creatures. The expedition documented a new type of squid, further adding to the diversity of species found in this remote underwater environment. The scientists used sonar technology to map the mountain’s structure, highlighting the vastness of the underwater world. This discovery underscores the importance of ocean exploration, revealing the hidden wonders and biodiversity of the deep sea, and emphasizes the urgent need to protect these fragile ecosystems.
