A bottlenose dolphin in Japan has become the subject of study after it has reportedly attacked humans over 50 times in recent years. The dolphin’s behavior, considered abnormal for the typically friendly species, has led experts to believe it may be experiencing loneliness. Since July 21, 18 swimmers have been attacked by the dolphin in a coastal town, with all attacks believed to be perpetrated by the same male dolphin. Bottlenose dolphins are known for their social nature, living in pods, making this dolphin’s solitary behavior unusual. While the bites have been described as ‘gentle,’ experts warn that even non-aggressive bites from dolphins can cause injury due to their sharp teeth. Swimmers in the area have been advised to exit the water if they encounter the dolphin. Researchers believe the dolphin’s aggression could stem from its social isolation, attempting to interact with humans to fill a social void.
