Former European Commissioner António Vitorino has voiced his support for Maria Luís Albuquerque’s nomination as Portugal’s next European Commissioner, stating that she possesses the necessary qualifications and experience for the role. Vitorino, a former commissioner for Justice and Home Affairs, acknowledged the challenges facing Europe and highlighted the importance of unity. However, he expressed a preference for a broader consensus on the appointment, suggesting it might have been more prudent to consult with various political parties. The Portuguese Socialist Party has criticized Albuquerque’s past policies, particularly those related to austerity, deeming them inconsistent with the European Union’s current priorities. The government, however, has defended its choice, emphasizing Albuquerque’s experience and suitability for the position.
