A major flood prevention project for Thessaly, Greece, is set to receive significant funding and is being fast-tracked to improve the region’s resilience against future natural disasters. The project, which includes the modernization of existing flood defense systems, was approved by the Government Committee for Contracts of Strategic Importance. The project aims to upgrade and modernize existing flood defense systems, which were impacted by the devastating Daniel storm in 2023. The project includes updating and improving flood management plans, updating cost estimates, and revising timelines for project completion. The total budget for the project is estimated to be between €32 million and €49 million, with the initial study phase funded by a €7 million donation from the Hellenic Banking Association. The project is expected to begin immediately, with the study phase estimated to take 10 to 12 months.
