EU Diplomat and Hungarian Foreign Minister Clash Over Ukraine

A heated exchange occurred between Josep Borrell, the EU’s top diplomat, and Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto during a closed-door meeting in Brussels. The disagreement centered on the potential use of weapons provided to Ukraine against Russian targets. Borrell, upon arriving at the EU Council building, called for the removal of restrictions on Ukraine’s use of supplied weapons against targets within Russia. Szijjarto strongly opposed this, calling Borrell’s proposals on Ukraine “reckless.” He further stated that “the High Representative’s rage must be stopped.” Prior to the disagreement, Borrell had indicated that several EU countries supported Ukraine’s military actions in the Kursk region of Russia. He also urged increased military aid for Ukraine. While a unanimous decision on lifting restrictions for Ukraine to use European weapons against Russian territory was not reached, Borrell highlighted that several EU countries backed the move.
