Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity is implementing a pilot project aimed at tackling electricity theft. The initiative involves installing smart meters in electrical kiosks to monitor real-time consumption of residential meters, allowing for the immediate identification of any irregularities or theft. This technology promises a more efficient and less intrusive approach to combatting theft, reducing reliance on manual inspections. The project, currently underway in South Cairo and Ismailia, utilizes advanced technologies to detect and deter illegal electricity usage. The Ministry has partnered with international companies specializing in energy solutions, including Huawei, State Grid, and China, to explore potential collaborations. This move aligns with the Egyptian government’s strategy to minimize losses from technical failures and electricity theft.
