Magdy Sadek, a member of the Egyptian Chamber of Tourism Companies, has praised the Egyptian government’s efforts in transforming El Alamein from a former minefield into a thriving tourist destination and a global trend. He believes that the city will become a major tourist hub over the next decade. The El Alamein Festival is seen as a powerful tool to promote this new tourist product, with events extending beyond August. A World Club Handball Championship will take place in El Alamein from September 27th, and investors are offering significant discounts in September and October. El Alamein’s development has shifted Egypt’s tourism from a seasonal industry to one that operates year-round. Sadek emphasizes the importance of festival tourism, highlighting its role in showcasing Egypt’s soft power, similar to the once-popular Egyptian radio and television festivals. He points out that fans are drawn to festivals to see their favorite performers, and the tourism sector should be closely integrated with these events to attract more visitors. However, he acknowledges a shortage of hotel rooms to accommodate the anticipated 30 million tourists by 2028. The current policy of selling real estate to foreigners, allowing them to rent out chalets and hotel rooms, is seen as a way to increase hotel capacity, following the model of popular tourist destinations like France and Spain.
