Egypt has reaffirmed its strong commitment to collaborating with Asian nations in addressing climate change challenges, pledging support for Azerbaijan’s upcoming hosting of the COP29 climate summit. Egypt’s Minister of Environment, Yasmine Fouad, highlighted the importance of 2024 as a critical year for global climate action, emphasizing the significance of the upcoming United Nations conventions on climate change, biodiversity, and desertification. She stressed Egypt’s full support for Azerbaijan’s efforts to ensure a successful COP29, aiming to meet the needs of both developing and developed countries. Minister Fouad also expressed optimism for achieving a new collective goal for financing climate action at COP29, building upon the progress made in launching the Loss and Damage Fund at COP27 in Egypt. The minister highlighted the crucial role of technology transfer and sustainable agricultural practices for a more just and sustainable future. She underscored the importance of the Montreal Framework for Biodiversity, which was adopted at COP15, and the need to accelerate its implementation for nature restoration and climate resilience. Finally, Minister Fouad emphasized the importance of a circular economy approach, engaging the private sector in waste management and green investments, highlighting Egypt’s commitment to achieving 100% green public investments by 2030.
