The District Anti Narcotic Special Action Force (DANSAF) in Kollam, Kerala, is intensifying its efforts to crack down on the drug mafia operating in the district. In response to the growing drug trade, DANSAF is conducting increased inspections at known drug hotspots and focusing on inter-state bus and train routes, particularly during the Onam festival. Last week, DANSAF officers seized MDMA from a bus driver traveling from Bengaluru to Kollam. Between 2023 and 2024, DANSAF has conducted over 200 raids, leading to the seizure of 702 grams of MDMA, 30,700 drug pills, and 69 kilos of cannabis. The team also destroyed 16 cannabis plants. The team is comprised of nine members, including an SI, who are selected based on their track record and expertise in anti-narcotic operations. While most of those caught in drug raids are under 35, DANSAF officials report an alarming trend involving young women and minors in drug trafficking, particularly those arriving from other states. DANSAF’s primary objectives are to gather intelligence on drug sales, production, storage, and distribution networks, support local police in NDPS cases, assist investigating officers, and raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse.
