A 14-month-old boy who was kidnapped in Jaipur has been safely recovered after police tracked down the perpetrator, a head constable from the Uttar Pradesh police, who had assumed the guise of a saint in Mathura. The kidnapper, Tanuj Chahar, was the victim’s maternal uncle’s son and had been on the run since the incident in June 2023. He was located in Vrindavan, where he had grown a beard and mustache, donned saffron robes, and was living in a hut, pretending to be a holy man. To apprehend him, Jaipur police officers disguised themselves as saints, singing devotional hymns to approach Chahar. However, he noticed the police and fled with the child, leading officers on a chase through the fields. Ultimately, Chahar was apprehended on August 27th and the child was safely returned to his family. Chahar had been suspended from his post in the Uttar Pradesh police and was wanted for the kidnapping. He had been attempting to coerce the child’s mother into complying with his demands by holding her son hostage. This case highlights the lengths criminals will go to evade capture and underscores the commitment of police to protect the innocent.
